Team Leader: Robert Falcon Scott
Meet Captain Scott, an officer in the British Royal Navy. He became a famous explorer and national hero after his first expedition to Antarctica. His team had traveled farther south than anyone before. His next goal: to be the first to reach the South Pole!

The Race is On!
Scott thought they were alone in their quest for the South Pole. But during a stop in Australia, he received a short mysterious telegram. It was from Roald Amundsen, another famous explorer: the Norwegians were heading for the Pole too!

Set Sail!
On June 1, 1910, crowds in London cheered as Captain Scott set sail for Antarctica. His old wooden whaling ship was named the Terra Nova. It means “new land,” named after the island of Newfoundland.

Meet the Terra Nova Crew
More than 6,000 men volunteered for this dangerous adventure to the South Pole, but Scott chose only 64 for his crew. They were a mix of sailors, scientists, and other explorers. A few had even been to Antarctica before.

Ponies, Dogs, and Motor Sleds
For the trek to the South Pole, the British team brought 19 ponies and 44 dogs. They also brought three “motor sleds.” These vehicles were still new and had never been used before on a polar expedition.
