The
Universe Zone probes the very limits of our powers of
observation. It features a thematic cluster on "Active
Galaxies" that explores these most extreme, powerful,
and distant objects in the universe. A swirling kinetic
sculpture demonstrates how gas streams into a supermassive
black hole, the central engine for these active galaxies.
A highlight in the Universe Zone is the Black Hole Theater,
a five-minute film that conveys the extreme forces of
gravity and the warping of space and time found near a
black hole. |
The Hall
also features a Hoberman Sphere, or an expansion sculpture,
in the Universe Zone. Set in a darkened room, the sculpture
is covered in phosphorescent galaxy shapes of light, and,
as they gradually spread, visitors can watch an accurate demonstration
of how the universe is expanding.
